RTE, Irish broadcaster, confirmed yesterday official that Nicky Byrne will represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm with the song "Sunlight". After the bad results in the last years with the winner of The Late Late Show RTE decided to chose this years repersentative internally.
After a lot of specualations from the past weeks now it's clear that former Westlife singer Nicky Byrne will be honoured to represent his country in Stockholm. As Westlife band member Nicky sold worldwide over 45 million records between 1998 and 2012. The band had 13 #1 singles in the UK and 12 #1 singles in Ireland. In total they released 10 studio albums, 8 of them reached #1 in Ireland's album sale charts.
Nicky Byrne is a 37 years old singer, songwriter, TV and radio presenter. He is married and has three children. He is also well known from Eurovision for presenting the points in the Eurovision final for Ireland (2013 - 2015)
Nicky said about his participation. "Like many of us, I have grown up watching the Eurovision Song Contest. It always brought great excitement to our house down through the years and I was lucky enough to see Ireland win it on many occasions. I have a great memory as a nine year old, of dancing around our sitting room in a tri-colour sweatshirt when Johnny Logan lifted the trophy in 1987.The Eurovision is a TV show and song contest like no other and for the past three years my Eurovision experience has gotten better and my affiliation grown stronger, as I have proudly delivered the Irish votes live from Dublin. This year I go one step further, and actually walk on that stage to represent my country, I am honoured RTÉ have chosen me and believe in this song like I do”.
“The song is called Sunlight and I co-wrote it with two of the music industry's legends; producer and writer Ronan Hardiman and songwriter Wayne Hector. I have always felt this song had something different, something special. I also look forward to re-visiting Sweden, a country where we had so much success with Westlife over the years and I can't wait to be a part of what I’m sure will be an amazing show in Stockholm. Ireland, I will give it my best shot. Sweden… here we come!". he continued.Nicky's entry "Sunlight" is a typical pop song and perfect for the radio. Irish entries from the last years recieved not really good results and in the last two years the contestants failed to qualify to the Eurovision final. The former Westlife singer is a good choice to bring Ireland back to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
