Latvia: Exclusive! Interview with Dvines "We are a little overwhelmed by so many things that are happening so fast"

Dvines are the twins Anastasia and Katherine and they are one of the contestants for the Latvian national selection "Supernova 2016" with their song "Set It On Fire". They will perform in the second heat of "Supernova 2016" on 14th February 2016 in Riga.

We had the chance to talk to the girls from Dvines some days ago about their participation in the Latvian national selection "Supernova 2016". Read our interview with them below to find out what they had to say...

Hello Anastasia, hello Katherine, first of all gratulations that you are one of the qualified participants for the Latvian national selection “Supernova 2016”.

How does it feel to be part of the national selection with your song “Set It On Fire”?
Dvines: Thank you! It feels great. This is our first time taking part in national Eurovision selection - we are a little overwhelmed by so many things that are happening so fast, but excited at the same time.

Who had the idea that you could participate in the Latvian national selection and who decided “Set It On Fire”?
Dvines: We’ve been working on our EP for the last year, some songs were done and ready by the time the auditions were announced, so we decided to give it a try, and “Set it On Fire” seemed like a right choice.

What is the message of "Set It On Fire"?
Dvines:  “Set it On Fire” is one of the pieces of the story puzzle of the EP. Since we are the writers of the song, it is very personal, it tells about our state of being a while ago, when we felt like we’ve had enough of doubts and worrying about our music and just decided to let it go. It tells about a desire to set all the fears, insecurities and other people opinions on fire, let go and go your own way, enjoying it.

Can you tell us something about the beginning of your career?
Dvines: We started out as DVINES at a quite young age - when we were 17. Back then we didn’t know exactly what to do with our voices, music genres and our image in overall. We just went with the flow. We’ve released various singles in english, collaborated with various dance music producers and took part in several Latvian TV Shows. We’ve been away from the public eye for the last 3 years, and now we finally have found the right genre for ourselves and our unique sound - now we’re ready to show it to the world.

How is it to work together with the own sister?
Dvines: It is the best thing possible :D Since we are so in tune in everything we do, it is easy to compromise on things, it’s easy to understand each other, and since we have very similar taste in music, in style - we are very united.

What is the meaning of the band name “DVINES”?
Dvines: Dvines means “twins-sisters” in Latvian. We tried different names when we started out, but everyone just kept on calling us “Dvines”, so we decided to stick to this name. Everybody, who is not Latvian, pronounces it like “D-Vines”, which is great too.

What are you expecting in the national selection “Supernova 2016”, are you excited?
Dvines: We are expecting to have a lot of fun and enjoy our performance as much as we can. It is not about the competition for us, it is about celebrating music and being true to yourself musically.

How do you prepare yourself for the show?
Dvines: We’ve been working very hard for the last month, starting with the design of our stage outfits, and choreography of course. We’ll be dancing on high heels, so this is the major concern for us at the moment.

Are you Eurovision fans?
Dvines: The first year Latvia took part in Eurovision in 1999 was the year when Latvian band “Brainstorm” ended up third. So obviously everyone was hyped and excited, so were we. We followed Eurovision since then, but we can’t call ourselves die hard fans, since we put our focus on a less popular underground dance music arena.

Which are your favorite Eurovision songs and what is your favorite from Latvian entries?
Dvines: We loved “Molitva” from Serbia and “Euphoria” by Loreen. The favorite acts from Latvia must be Aminata’s last year song, because it has the electronic feel, that we can relate too, and PER’s “Here we go”, which unfortunately ended up last, but we like it, cos it is very authentic, celebrating youth and it also brings out their own style, without necessarily fitting in Eurovision music format.
What is your first Eurovision memory?
Dvines: Brainstorm at Eurovision :) We were only 8 back then.

What are your plans for 2016 beside the Latvian national selection, are you working on a album?
Dvines: Yes, we are indeed working on an album, and we are very excited about it. After a lot of years working in music industry, we have finally found our unique style and genre, we want to work in. It is going to be a mini album, created in pop genre influenced by modern house and UK garage, produced by a young talented Latvian producer - MAKREE. We are really looking forward to get it done and present it to the public!

What was the most excited moment in your life?
Dvines: It’s hard to pick just one moment, but we guess those moments on stage, in front of the cheering audience, doing a thing u love and believe in are the best!

If people outside Latvia never heared about you before – what should they know about you?
Dvines: They should know, that we are fresh, hardworking and humble.

Why should the Latvian audience vote for your song to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2016?
Dvines: First of all they only should vote, if they like it! We also believe we are fresh, young, modern - music we make could easily fit into modern european music stage and we believe, we’ve got the potential to become a decent export product to carry Latvia’s name further in Europe.

Do you have a message for “Join Us on Eurovision” readers and your fans?
Dvines: We wish everyone to enjoy life the fullest, be present. Lets not make a big deal out of the competition - it’s really primarily about music and the joy it brings!

Thank you so much for answer those questions. Good luck for you and your song in the Latvian national selection and maybe we see us in Stockholm!
