Hello guys, first of all gratulations that you are one of the qualified participants for the Latvian national selection “Supernova 2016”.
How does it feel to be part of the national selection with your song “Demons”?
Crow Mother: The feeling is good – its always good to see that your music has been appreciated and the fact that "Demons" made it into the final shortlist gives us some additional drive to go on.
Who had the idea that you could participate in the Latvian national selection and who decided “Demons”?
Crow Mother: Mainly we wanted to challenge ourselves because at the moment of the contest announcement we were a little bored by everyday routine. Besides that, the format for local Eurovision song selection was changed to Supernova contest in 2015 and we saw that it kind a became more objective and professional – not only plain “beauty & popularity” contest. The song "Demons" kind a came up during the recording process for second album and as its sounding differed from whole album concept we decided to throw it in for contest and just watch how it goes.
What is the message of "Demons"?
Crow Mother: Song tell a story that dealing with your inner demons is a key to a new beginning. These demons can be very individual for everyone but in most cases the main thing that holds you back from new challenges and opportunities is the fear from the fact that your life would change and you would have to leave your comfort zone.
"Demons" is the song that encourages everyone to be brave and embrace the opportunities that life throws at you and to forget the fears from unknown. You have to acknowledge that changes are good and every day is kind a like new beginning – full of new opportunities and only you can fight the demons that hold you back.
Can you tell us something about the beginning of your career and when you have met first?
Crow Mother: Crow Mother was formed in March 2012 but we knew each other for long time before joining forces under the name of Crow Mother. We have played together in different bands before. Edgars (bass) and Janis aka. Jenky (guitar) are childhood friends who took Martins (drums) along from the last band they were playing in together. The three of us started to jam together but we needed vocals so we invited Eddie to join our crew as he has one of the most amazing rock vocals in Baltics and so Crow Mother was born.
Shortly after forming in 2012 we kicked off with recording first singles "Killing the Love", "Sugar, Blood & Wine" and “Winterland”. These first records were more like experiment for us to find our own sound that became more individual in our debut album “Changes” that was release in the beginning of 2014. After that we went on tour in UK and Baltic's and in 2015 work on the second album started. Actually the first single from the new album is already out and can be found on music streaming services – its called "Grey Wolf”. Production work on the album is still in process, and the album will be released in the spring of 2016.
Crow Mother: TV studio stage is a bit different from live concerts so we have to think more from TV viewers perspective and it will be interesting experience for us all. Right now its really hard to give any predictions as the first heat that took place last week had some surprises. We are not thinking about possible results or voting – we just stay focused on our 3 minutes of show and having fun in process.
How do you prepare yourself for the show?
Crow Mother: As we don’t have to prepare extravagant dresses and our style is good old rock ‘n roll its not so hard. We just work out stage setup and our performance to be sure that we can perform our song in the best possible way – because these 3 minutes is all we got. There won’t be a big explosions or anything like that but still we want to give a good show for everyone watching.
Are you Eurovision fans?
Crow Mother: Not really. We occasionally watch some performances or national selection process but it really depends on who is participating. If it’s the usual bunch of Eurovision veterans, then its not so interesting. For some of the last years the contest for selecting the Latvian artists had gone awfully of the course. So it actually was a nice surprise that last year jury managed to select Aminata and her song "Love Injected" is one of our favourite songs from this contest. If we look at the whole history of Eurovision then probably the best song would be Abba "Waterloo" in 1974. Oh, of course, Lordi from Finland also was a fun act that kind a kicked Eurovision’s ass.
Crow Mother: We are working on our second album - all the recording process is done and we plan to release it in the spring. After that we plan to look for new adventures going on tour to Baltics and Europe - and of course get in some trouble along the way to get inspiration for new material.
What was the most excited moment in your life?
Crow Mother: It’s quite impossible to define one exact moment as almost every time when we do something together – go to concerts or tours or just hang out as friends – we manage to discover new ways to get into the new adventures that can be remembered for lifetime. So we believe that such there are still many new and exciting experiences ahead of us and we are ready to take them!
If people outside Latvia never heared about you before – what should they know about you?
Crow Mother: They should just listen – if you want to know us, just go out on internet and find some Crow Mother music and see for yourselves what you think. That will tell you if we are worth your time.
Why should the Latvian audience vote for your song to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2016?
Crow Mother: We believe its all about the passion – not calculation and adapting to Eurovision format trying to guess the right combo. And we have put all our heart in t what we are doing and the music we are playing. Rock music really makes our blood pump faster and frees up everyone wild side. That’s what music is all about – being what you are and delivering real emotions and energy. We just hope that our music will spark some positive energy in listeners too.
Do you have a message for “Join Us on Eurovision” readers and your fans?
Crow Mother: Rock music is the mother of all the pop-culture - rock is not dead. Europe, you can prove it!
Thank you so much for answer those questions. Good luck for you and your song in the Latvian national selection and maybe we see us in Stockholm!
