Latvia: Exclusive! Interview with Riga Metro "We hope our song 'High Heels' make people think deeper"

Riga Metro are one of the Semi-Finalists for the national selection 'Supernova 2015' in Latvia with their song called 'High Heels'. They will perform in Pre-Round 2 on 8th of February 2015.

We had the chance to talk to Riga Metro about their participation in the Latvian national selection. Read our interview with them below to find out what they had to say...

Hello guys, first of all gratulations that you are one of the qualified participants for the National Selection ‘Supernova 2015’ with your song ‘High Heels.

How does it feel to be part of ‘Supernova 2015’?
Riga Metro: This is a kind of unexpected success. This is a first time in Latvian ESC history when independent underground scene is put on the governmentally supported pop music contest. Was it a mistake or cry for changes – we hope that it was the second option.
Who had the idea that you could participate with ‘High Heels’?
Riga Metro: Well, it is not a question about who, but more about „why?“. As you know, this year selection process for Eurovision Song Contest is called Supernova. As the Supernova PM says, they (Supernova jury) are focused on discovering new talents, not just on selection of the best performer for Eurovision. We are not sure, that the talent show is exactly what we need, but definitely we need broadcasting time, because we want to show, that Latvian music scene has much more to offer, than schlager, pop, rock and country music stars.
Can you tell us something about the story behind ‘High Heels?
Riga Metro: This is a love song about that tiny & dangerous border between reality and illusions, which come together with falling in love. Also, the song seems to challenge the pop-culture standards of what is beautiful, sexual or stylish. "Red lips, bitchy look, high heels - is this that will make his heart feel?" – Except from "High heels".
Elina (Riga Metro voc): "Of course, that is nothing new, that pop industry affects our perception about what is beautiful, sexy or stylish. But I hope, our song will make people think deeper - what they really value in their partners, and hopefully - the song will keep some true love stories from falling apart."

Can you tell us something about the beginning career, where have you met each other?
Riga Metro: We have met in different times and places, it is not so important. Creatively we started in famous Riga bar “Leningrad” – this is good place for wasting your life time and money. You can meet there all kinds of losers – fortuneless musicians, writers, poets, managers, sellers, designers etc. Watching all this is a good motivation for stopping talking and starting doing.
What are you expecting in the Latvian national selection ‘Supernova 2015’, are you excited?
Riga Metro: Excited – it’s not the word!!! We have a great opportunity to be broadcasted to every Latvian household by one the most popular Latvian TV-channel. At the same time we feel stressed and are afraid that we will not manage to prepare in time our performance as impressive as we would like. Still, our task is to be impressive, defiant and use every technical and social resource offered by Supernova 2015 – now or never. If you ask us about our success and proceeding to the next level, we would like to be cautious and conservative, because our music is quite new for 90% of Latvian society.
Are you Eurovision fans?
Riga Metro: No. We hold neutral position.
What is your first Eurovision memory?
Riga Metro: Sure it was Latvian first performance on Eurovision Song contest, where band named “Brain Storm” got 3rd position.

On the next day all mass media were full of pathetic articles about nationwide victory and people comments that they were proud to be Latvians and so on. And we didn’t understand – why? The only thing people did, they watched stupid TV-box and now suddenly they became proud of our nation. Practically in one moment they forgot about stupid politicians, corruption, poverty, and big big yellow sun started to shine over our ravished country… wtf?

What should people know about you if they never heard about Riga Metro before?
Riga Metro: They should repeatedly check our tour dates.
What are your plans for 2015 beside ‘Supernova’?
Riga Metro: Now we are focused on recording and publishing our new album “Take the Red Line”.
What was the most excited moment in your life?
Riga Metro: Oh, hard to remember…. :-) One of most excited moments was our musical performance on Riga Pride 2009. That was our protest against Latvian music society (well known personalities on Latvian music scene), who on the same day participated in “Family festival” organized by Catholic Church. Needless to say that “Family festival” is nothing but the action against Pride, gays, lesbians and transsexuals. That was our strangest gig ever – pro-activists on one side, police “robocops”, cordons and homophobes on the other side.  And we are in the middle and playing our music. And you know what?! - Both sides kept on dancing :-)
Why should the audience from Latvia vote for your song to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2015?
Riga Metro: We think that the audience has an opportunity to show Europe some kind of music versatility coming out of Latvia. That is the way how things usually develop – you throw away old values and create an empty place for new ones. Probably we couldn’t compete with real strong pop music professionals from whole Europe, but at least we could show some new directions.
Do you have a message for ‘Join Us on Eurovision’ readers and your fans?
Riga Metro: Well, we hope that finally they will vote for music they like, not for the country they like.
Thank you so much for answer those questions. Good luck for you and your song in ‘Supernova 2015’ and maybe we see us in Vienna!
