Watch their Eurovision 2014 performance of 'Something Better':
Softengine (06.09.2014 - MS/Baltic) |
Softengine: Well, it was a surprise for us. We didn’t expect such a high position in the final. Our only goal was to reach the Eurovision final. In our Semi-Final we reached 3rd place. So, yes, that’s a surprise for us :)
Do you have any idea what could be the reason why you got such a good result this year? It’s the best result since the victory from Lordi in 2006.
Softengine: We have no idea. Maybe our song was something different to the other Eurovision songs. Our song stands out from the competition.
What has changed in your life after your Eurovision participation and what happened in the last three months?
Softengine: We have a lot of gigs. Sometimes when we walk on the streets people are coming to us and wanna talk to us, taking pictures and getting autographs. It’s been a awesome summer.
You already released your follow up single ‘Yellow House’. Can you tell us something about the story behind the song?
Softengine: The song is about to make your dreams come true. Basicly if you have dreams , than you have to do something to make them come true.
Who had the idea for your Eurovision participation?
Softengine: The idea came from our bass player.
Who decided ‘Something Better’ for the national final in Finland?
Softengine: We wrote ‘Something Better’ especially for UMK. Topi came from work and heared this cool and funky guitar riff and started playing it. So we thought ‘Ok, UMK starts. We make a song for UMK’ and some days later we had the song.
Are you planning to release an album?
Softengine: Yeah, we are actually working on the final details. We will release our album next month, on 17th of October.
What will be the album title?
Softengine: That’s a secret. We can’t talk about that at the moment. But you will get the information soon.. ;) The album will include 11 songs.
Can you tell us something about the style for the album?
Softengine: Well, it will be more like ‘Yellow House’. The album includes a lot of different music styles and genres. There will be some more electronic stuff.
Which plans do you have with the album and the promotion?
Softengine: We will start to go on tour after we released the album. We don’t know what the record label thinks – you should ask our manager :) We hope that they will bring us to other countries outside from Finland.
Which plans do you have with Softengine besides the first album release?
Softengine: Well, we will start to write new songs for a second album. If we released our album we will start working on the next one. Write and record new songs and go on tour with our music.
You already did your soundcheck for the Eurovision Cruise. Are you satisfied?
Softengine: Absolutely. The stage is fine and it’s a beautiful place to play. We like the club :) We have never been on a ship to make a gig. We are excited.
What can people expect tonight? Do you plan anything special?
Softengine: We have a different kind of setlist to our performances from the last weeks. Tonight it’s shorter. We will play 45 minutes, normally we have 1 hour.
Are you planning to play any Eurovision cover?
Softengine: No, we only play our own music tonight.
What was your first connection the the Eurovision Song Contest?
Softengine: This question is not so easy. Well, my uncle played on the Eurovision Song Contest with Teräsbetoni in 2008 with the song ‘Missä miehet ratsastaa‘. After that I was hyped for the competition. We watch it every year. It’s a family thing and we watch it every year together.
Do you have any Eurovision favorites?
Softengine: With no doubt – Loreen with ‘Euphoria’ and of course, Abba.
What do you think about this years Winner – Conchita Wurst?
Softengine: It’s a good song. She is an awesome singer.
What was the funniest moment in Copenhagen?
Softengine: It’s hard to decide. I think maybe hanging out with the Icelandic guys from Pollapönk. They were very funny :)
If people don’t know you – what should they know about you?
Softengine:We are not a normal rock band. We make – in my opinion – intresting music. We make music in different genres. It’s not just guitar and drums. It’s ‘Something Better’ ;)
